Using the OrbixPanel web terminal (and its limits)
OrbixPanel includes a terminal right in the browser — handy for quick checks, running your app’s own scripts, and reading logs without opening an SSH client.
What it runs as
The panel terminal runs as an unprivileged user and cannot use sudo.
That’s a deliberate security boundary: a browser terminal with root access would
mean anyone who got into your panel session owned the whole server. So some
things simply won’t work there — and that’s by design, not a bug.
What you can do
- Move around and inspect files:
ls,cd,cat,grep,find - Check your app:
node -v,php -v,python3 --version - Run project scripts:
npm run build, php artisan migrate - Read logs:
tail -f app.log - Use Git:
git status,git pull
What you can’t do (and the better way)
| You tried… | Why it’s blocked | Do this instead |
|---|---|---|
sudo apt install … | No root in the terminal | Let OrbixPanel install system packages for you |
sudo npm install | No root | Use Deploy from Git — the panel installs & builds with the right permissions |
| Editing nginx / system config | Protected | Use the panel’s website, SSL, and PHP tools |
The rule of thumb: anything that needs root, let the panel do it. It runs those steps server-side through its agent, safely and logged. See Deploying apps without the terminal.
Prefer a real shell?
For full command-line access (package installs, system tasks), use SSH as the server’s admin user from your own machine. Keep the browser terminal for the quick, unprivileged day-to-day.
