MySQL or PostgreSQL? Choosing a database on OrbixPanel
OrbixPanel installs both major open-source databases, so you can run whatever your app expects:
- MySQL / MariaDB — the default for most PHP apps (WordPress, Laravel) and a huge share of the web. Managed in the panel and via phpMyAdmin.
- PostgreSQL — a powerful relational database popular with modern app frameworks (Django, Rails, many Node/Go apps) and anything needing advanced SQL, JSON, or geospatial features.
Quick guide
| Your app… | Use |
|---|---|
| WordPress, Joomla, most PHP CMSes | MySQL/MariaDB (required) |
| Laravel | Either — MySQL is the common default |
| Django / Rails | PostgreSQL is the usual choice |
| Node / Go with an ORM | Whatever your ORM is configured for |
| You just need “a database” | MySQL — the most widely documented |
Both run locally on your server, so apps connect fast over localhost with no
network exposure.
How each is managed
- MySQL/MariaDB: create databases and users in the panel; use
phpMyAdmin for tables, queries,
and import/export. Connects on
127.0.0.1:3306. - PostgreSQL: create databases and users in the panel; connects on
127.0.0.1:5432.
