Install an app from a URL or Git repository
Beyond the ready-made catalog, OrbixPanel can install an app from any source you point it at — a downloadable archive or a Git repository.
Two source types
- Archive URL — a direct link to a
.zip,.tar.gz,.tgz,.tar.bz2, or.tarfile (e.g. an official release download). OrbixPanel downloads and extracts it into your site. - Git repository — a
.gitURL or a known Git host. OrbixPanel clones it.
OrbixPanel detects which you’ve given from the URL — an archive extension means a
tarball, a .git/Git-host URL means a clone.
Install from an archive
- Find the app’s official release archive link.
- In the App Catalog / install screen, choose install from URL and paste it.
- OrbixPanel extracts it into your site’s web root and figures out what to serve
(e.g. a static
index.html, or a PHP app’s entry).
Great for CMSes and tools distributed as release tarballs.
Install from Git
Paste a repository URL (and a branch if not the default). For an app you built
yourself, prefer Deploy from Git — it also
installs dependencies, builds, and runs server apps, with the
$PORT contract handled for you.
| You’re installing… | Best path |
|---|---|
| A release archive of a CMS/tool | install from URL (this guide) |
| Your own Node/Python/Go/PHP app | Deploy from Git |
| A popular app (WordPress, etc.) | the catalog |
Database-backed apps
If the app needs a database, create one and complete the app’s own setup wizard — see Install Joomla, phpBB & other CMSes.
After install
Point your domain, request SSL, and keep it updated.
